The first question most clients ask is "What is a Phys Sec?" "Is it FySek? “How do you pronounce it?" The name Phys Sec is an acronym for Physical Security, the focus of the company's services. Phys Sec was formed in 2004 after its owner, Bill Crews, was approached by a few small business owners in Southern California . They were concerned about the security of the company's networks and how they can better protect them. After speaking with other small to medium size business owners Bill saw that there was a need for his security expertise in the private sector.

Bill Crews' depth of experience was gained by over 20 years of federal service in agencies such as the U.S. Navy, the State Department, the White House and NASA.

After serving in the Navy for 6 years as an electronics technician Bill entered the federal government working with electronic security systems. His interest in physical security was immediate and intense. He sought out training as well as new projects to put his skills to work.

At the same time he started pursuing his academic credentials in security management. Over the next several years Bill continued to seek more responsible positions that would expose him to other facets of security. During his tenure with two State Department agencies he traveled extensively overseas performing physical security work at diplomatic mission in over 40 countries.

As IT systems became more commonplace Bill's interest in building his IT security skills grew. As part of his information security responsibilities he conducted vulnerability assessments to better protect the sensitive information that was migrating from paper to electronics.

Bill successfully created computer forensics programs in two separate agencies. Four weeks after 9/11 Bill received a call from a colleague at the White House asking if he would like to help establish a complete security program at one of the executive agencies there. As the Deputy Director of Security for the United States Trade Representative Bill's first weeks on the job was spent providing security for a White House delegation attending trade negotiations in Doha , Qatar , 8 weeks after the attacks on 9/11.

In his constant search for new challenges Bill moved to southern California and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center . His immediate challenge was to rebuild a security infrastructure that had been neglected for nearly a decade. The research center now utilizes some of the latest digital security technology on the market.
